1. A high-ranking Christian cleric, in modern churches usually in charge of a diocese and in some churches regarding as having received the highest ordination in unbroken succession from the apostles. He was the Bishop of Chicago.
2. Ordained or consecrated member of the Christian clergy. Generally entrusted with the position of authority and oversight. Within the United Methodist Church only bishops are empowered to consecrate bishops and ordain clergy.
