1. A weapon consisting of a metal tube from which a projectile is fired at high velocity into a relatively flat trajectory. Heavy artillery guns rained fire down on our enemy.
2. A portable fire arm, such as a rifle or revolver. Many hunters carry a hand gun as well as a rifle.
3. To go after in earnest; set out to obtain. He was gunning for a promotion.
4. A professional killer. They wanted to get a hired gun to do the killing.
5. To open up the throttle of a n engine as to accelerate. He gunned the engine and sped off.
