1. The part of the Earth which is not covered by oceans or other bodies of water. The Earth's total land mass is 148,939,063.133 km2 (57,505,693.767 sq mi) which is about 29.2% of its total surface.
2. A partitioned and measurable area which is owned and which building can be erected. We have 11 acres of land.
3. A country or region. They came from a faraway land.
4. Ground that is suitable for farming. Plant potatoes in the land.
5. The space between the rifling grooves in a rife or gun. Each barrel of the rifle has lands and grooves.
6. To descend to a surface, especially from the air. Planes land at an airport.
7. To come to a rest. He fell but landed on his feet.
8. To bring to land. Use a net to land your fish.
9. To arrive at land, especially a shore, or a dock, from a body of water. We landed our small boat on the beach.
