We suggest the the use of Harper Collins Pocket Thesaurus as an excellent book
to use the study the English language. This book has over 12,000 entries and
over 130,000 synonyms. The book is 4.5 by 6 inches and 2 inches thick.
This book has been compiles by referring to the Bank of English, a unique
database of the English Language with examples of over 450 million words taken
from a very wide range of American and internatiuonal books, newspapers,
magazines, radio, TV, letter and talks, reflecting the whole spectrum of
English today. Thius data base enables Collins lexicographers to analyze how
American Englishis actually used today and how it is changing.
It lists the part of speech for the synonyms. The key synonyms are given first
and are in all caps. As is shown in the word "abandon" the sense numbers divide
the synonoyms by type. The word "slang" as shown in the word "abduct" indicates
when that synonym is considered slang.
