Comparison of Adjectives -- Page 1

Introduction

The form of an adjective is often changed to show the extent or degree to which a certain quality is present. In grammar, this change in from to show a difference in degree is called comparison. There are three degrees of comparison in English:

  1. The Positive Degree
  2. The Comparative Degree
  3. The Superlative Degree

The Positive Degree

The positive degree is really not a degree of comparison because no comparison is indicated when the positive degree is used. The positive degree is the simplest form of the adjective. It shows that the quality is present, but does not show a comparison with anything else. The adjective in the following sentences are all in the positive degree

That is a beautiful day. Joan is helpful. It was a very cold day.
We sold the old house. Peter is very tall. Monday was a warm day.
