What is extraneous comes from without and is unessential or irrelevant: an issue extraneous to the debate.
Something foreign is markedly different from and incompatible with the thing in question: Jealousy is foreign to his nature.
What is alien is irreconcilably different: an economic theory alien to the spirit of capitalism.
