This map shows you how the West again in both under developed and populated. The lack of arable land contributes mostly to the unequal distribution of the population. Secondly the ethnic minorities over the years were somewhat relegated to the West as the majority Han's seized the fertile land in the East from the less organized tribal minorities.

The darker the color the higher the density. Note the white western area that is uninhabited.
