Chinese Agricultural and Rural Scenes

24. Sichuan Farmland

This is a scene of farmland in southern Sichuan province. The land is hillier and has been terraced to allow flood irrigation. Note that there are no roads in sight. China and the USA are virtually the same size. China has five times the population as the USA. USA has 26% of its land can be farmed while China has only 11% of its land that is farmable. So China must make more of its land able to be farmed by leveling the hilly land with terracing. Sometimes you see a four-foot wall being built to gain a two-foot strip of farmland.
