Our Trip to Qingdao, Shandong 11. German Architecture Most of these European buildings were now Government offices occupied by various Communist groups. Most of the beaches are now enjoyed by the common people except some that are for high government officials. We spent one day swimming at beach number one. It caused quite a stir because Paul has so much hair. Some people called him a bear and were quite amused at the sight. Some of the fancy buildings are for use for these officials as well. We had a delightful time there. Hua and his family had a truly magnificent dinner for us at their home. We had to go at night because foreigners were not allowed in Chinese homes in those days. I had to have my shoe repaired and a man on the street repaired it for me. He would not take any money because he said we were in China to help the Chinese. One night we went to a restaurant and a group of Chinese invited us to join them and feasted us to dinner just to be nice. The next day we boarded the train to go to Beijing.
