Police Car Visit to Lewis Ke Family, Countryside
7. Black and White to the Countryside

While Chairman Mao always insisted that China is an egalitarian society and all were equal, the reality is not the case. Lewis was from a peasant family and some students were giving him trouble because he was a peasant. Bernice and I decided we would visit his family to increase his standing in the university. A good friend of mine was the Police Chief in the City of Xinzheng and he volunteered to provide transportation to Lewis Ke's home. Lewis lived far out in the countryside some 100 miles from the University. On the day we had arranged the transportation turned out to our surprise a Black and White Police car with a policeman for a driver. Lao Sun was our Foreign Affairs Officer at the University and he went along with us. Next to him are our policeman driver, Lewis Ke and myself.
