Paul Noll and 'Paul' Hua Masun Our Trip to Qingdao, Shandong, China
4. Our Friend Hua Masun "Little Paul"

One of our students at Chengdu language school for scientists was Hua Masun. His English name was also Paul and because of that he became known as "Little Paul." He became a very good friend and he invited us to visit him at Qingdao, Shandong. Hua was a specialist in Blue-Green Algae. He worked at the Chinese National Academy of Sciences Institute of Oceanology and Limnology at Qingdao. He met our boat from Shanghai and got us a room at a hotel next to the Institute. We toured the institute (very impressive) and then visited their 300-foot Ocean going research ship. The Chinese are mapping the floor of the ocean down 100 meters with this vessel. We reviewed their computers on board and made some suggestions for improvements.
