Guizhou Province is the poorest province in China. Guizhou means "Expensive
Place" in English. Ninety percent of Guizhou is mountainous. The Chinese say
three things about Guizhou:
1. There is not three li of level land anywhere in the province. 2. There has never been three days of sunshine in a row. 3. There are not three bars of silver in the whole province. The province is plagued by its isolated location, poor infrastructure and poor communications. Guizhou has large deposits of coal but its neighbors find it cheaper to import coal from Africa and Australia. It is not a popular tourist spot but my wife and I spent a pleasant week in the capital city of Guiyang. |
