Nanjing City, Jiangsu, China Nanjing Drum Tower Built in 1382, the Drum Tower (Gulou) lies roughly in the center of Nanjing, on a traffic circle on Beijing Xilu. Drums were usually beaten to give directions for the change of the night watches and, in rare instances, to warn the populace of impending danger. Only one large drum remains today.
