Guiyuan Temple

In Hanyang, adjacent to Hankou, Stands Guiyuan Temple, largest along the Yangzi River. There locals actively light incense and pray for prosperity and health at shrines to the golden Buddha and Guanyi, the Goddess of Mercy. The main attraction consists of a cluster of 500 arhats (followers of Buddha), molded from clay in the early 1800s. A father and son molded these arhats in lively, comic poses, painted them with gold powder, and placed them on benches to face each other.
