The government has now allowed private businesses to go into the riverboat transportation business. They compete with the former government business quite well. People and goods are transported down the Yangzi by these companies. Twice we rode on these boats. Prices are quite cheap by American standards and affordable for the Chinese as well. We paid $18 U.S. for our five-day trip on these boats. We were the only foreigners on aboard.
