Mao Zedong and Lin Biao Mao Zedong and Lin Biao in happier times, smile for the cameras. Lin, the mastermind of the Great Cultural Revolution, holds the infamous "Little Red Book," Lin turned Mao into a "God." Lin turned on most of the rest of his comrades of the Long March and brought China to the brink of destruction. Later he would attempt a takeover of the government in which he would perish under strange circumstances. The Chinese Government has a number of different stories concerning his ultimate death. The arrest of the "Gang of Four" followed after Mao and Zhou Enlai died in 1976, starting the recovery of China under the eventual leadership of Deng Xiaoping.
