North Korean Kids Help us Setup Our Station

581st Radio Relay Co.
in North Korea (1950)

In North Korea wherever we stopped people would gather to see the excitement. There was never an exception. Here many kids showed up to see the action. They all wanted to help us. So we enlisted them to start carrying equipment to the top. They were most excited and ran both up and down the hill. You can see them carrying antenna mast sections. Each antenna mast kit has about 20 mast sections, a number of pegs, rope sets, a sledge and a base. The antenna itself kit is separate. Each comes in a box. We take out just what is needed to eliminate as much weight as possible. After enough primary stuff is on the top, I have to get it into operation. The minimum is the two transmitters, two receivers, a generator, signal generator, test equipment, four antennas, cables and crystals.

I then must power the generator, insert the correct crystal for the frequency I am to transmit and receive on and then tune the transmitters and receivers. Then the fun begins. The other stations that I am to transmit and receive from must have gotten to their location and set up and do the same thing as we do. You then set the antennas to your frequency and begin to transmit. "Hello Jade one this is Jade 2 over." Again and again every 5 minutes for a many days as it takes. Always listening for their call to you. One of the two of us must be awake all night. This station never operated and never got through.
