We Build a Shed for the Cook on Jade Relay 2 581st Radio Relay Co. in North Korea (1950)
14. We Build a Shed for the Cook

The construction of the sheds has poles lashed by rice straw rope. Because we are a signal unit we have chosen to substitute wire to lash the poles together. After that rope is wired horizontally every foot on the walls and ceiling. When that is done, rice matting is wired to the walls and ceiling. We add a large tarp to the top to help keep out the rain. Because of the importance and the work we have been assigned a cook to prepare food for us, which is very nice. In addition to keeping the station in operation 24/7 someone has to keep traveling to the quartermaster headquarters to fetch supplies such as oil, gasoline and food.

Because this station has a road and it is not far up the hill we have no base camp. We do buy chickens, rabbits, and rice from the local people. Prices are so low we pay for everything ourselves. The men sleep in a 16 by 32 foot squad tent, which has two gasolene fired pot bellied stoves. It will snow soon. We also eat our meals in this building. Our latrine is to the right rear. The man with his hands in his pockets is our cook. Hi-Res Pic (121K)
