Train to California - 1950 581st Radio Relay Company in Japan (1950)
2. 581st Takes train from Camp Gordon, GA. to California

North Korea attacked South Korea on June 25th, 1950. Most of us didn't quite know of Korea or the location. On 26 July, 1950 we began a 24-hour duty of packing all of our equipment for shipment to Korea. Waterproofing, building crates, Packing our radio equipment and then loading on railcars went on day and night for three days. Representatives from finance and legal departments helped with insurance, wills and other paperwork. On August 7th we loaded aboard a train on our way to California. The train ride lasted for four days. We ate in our mess gear from food wheeled down the aisle in big pots.

A very slow ride, we got shunted to sidings as other trains went by us. Here in this picture the train stops to let everyone get off to stretch our legs. We are somewhere in Colorado, Utah or Nevada. They never tell troops much information and it didn't matter anyway. We did have beds to sleep in each night.
