4th Infantry Division -- Fort Ord -- 1949

Daily, after breakfast, roll call is in front of the barracks and then we marched in formation for the training events of the day. Calisthenics is every day to get you into shape. Other events include classes on sanitation, rifle drill, firing at the rifle range, and long marches in full gear. We took a 30-mile march consisting of the entire division with a 90-pound pack and a 10-pound rifle. At the end you were then given an exercise to march one mile as fast as you could on a given azimuth. The last squad to arrive would be on KP duty that night. The entire squad must get there.

Our old guy began to flounder so someone took his pack but he still had trouble. I then took his rifle but he soon collapsed. I took another man's rifle and someone took his pack and another carried the floundering old man across the completion line. We weren't first but we weren't last. It was a good lesson in teamwork. Also, after you complete a long march you still must have enough energy left to fight.     Hi-Res Pic (114K)
