Richmond Relay Station Richmond Relay - 1969-70 39. Eating Cold rations during Alert

It was difficult working and staying in the field and made me appreciate being stationed on a permanent radio site. The other signalmen I met with EUSA were FM and VHF radio technicians which required them to move around a lot and stay in the field frequently too. I had become spoiled and already used to the good life on top of the mountain where we had houseboys, cooks and our own bar. Eating cool rations and drinking cold watered down coffee after a 1/2 mi. hike in a monsoon to the kitchen tent was not going to do for me.

However while I was in the field on alert near Pyongtek I did meet some nice guys from the signal outfit that was with EUSA. We compared notes and experiences about radio duty in Korea and hoped to get some officer interested in an exchange and cross training program for us permanent vs. mobile radio techs. It never happened of course but I enjoyed the experience, made a few contacts and I looked good in the eyes of my C.O. too
