I. Worker Safety

The workplace is a very dangerous place for Korean workers. South Korean factories are the most dangerous place to work in the industrialized world to work. According to government statistics, which measure only firms with at least 5 employees, 176 out of 10,000 workers were injured on the job in 1990. A record of 2,336 workers was killed at work, and 132,893 required at least 4 days in a hospital. The government has only 210 health and safety inspectors to monitor 130,000 work places and enforce the tougher health and safety laws recently enacted to curb the accidents.
