On 21 Sept (D-plus-8) the 7th Marines landed at Inchon. This map shows the assignment of forces both to take Kimpo Airfield, Yongdungpo, and Seoul as well as to cut off the escape of NKPA forces to the north. They assigned the Seventh to protect the northern flank and prevent the escape of NKPA forces. The 3rd Btn Seventh crossed the Han River on the morning of 23 Sept. Captain Thomas E. Cooney Led Company G through Hoengjeoe-ri on an attack of Hill 338 and then an attack on Hill 342. They also shared parts of Hill 338 and 342 with the NKPA. The Seventh took 34 POWs and claimed 375 enemy killed. They then assigned the Seventh to fight its way to Uijonbu. The regiment suffered losses of 13 killed and 111 wounded in this effort. On 7 Oct the Eighth Army relieved the Seventh. The 1st Marine Division then prepared to embark from Inchon for the impending invasion of Wonson. Division losses during this campaign amounted to 118 KIA, 845 WIA, 14 MIA and 286 Non-battle casualties for a total of 1,263. Other units of the X Corps and seventh Division moved south by truck and train towards Pusan to climb aboard troopships for the trip up the eastern coast.
