Epic of Fox Hill -- Page 7

By PFC Donald L. Childs, 1st Squad, 2nd Platoon, F/2/7 US Marines

Light machine guns were similar to the Japanese Nambu and the grenades were both concussion and fragmentation type. It was obvious we were up against an enemy capable of considerable force from sheer numbers as well as serviceable weapons. During the fierce battles to hold the hill, the severe cold took its own deadly toll as the plasma was frozen and men died for the need of it. Morphine units were carried in the mouths of the corpsmen to prevent freezing. The corpsmen did a tremendous job in caring for the wounded and preventing them from freezing to death.

The enemy wounded had no chance. When the men of Fox Company ventured out to assist the wounded who called for help, they were immediately met with both rifle and machine gun fire. This stopped all such attempts. The enemy wounded were soon silent as they froze.
