Epic of Fox Hill -- Page 10

Fox Held Again

Turning our field of fire from our right, where the line was broken, to an area at about 5 o'clock from our front and up the hill, we began to deliver the heaviest fire a BAR and an M1 could produce in a sweeping manner to clear the hill. A machine gun sounded off somewhere in that direction. The white figures began to run and fall. Fox Held.

The attack subsided and at the breaking of light we watched the enemy marching in two columns through the saddle of the ridge to our distant right front to prepare for the night to come. The morning drop was again a Marine operation. The C47 coming in very low in spite of sniper fire to push the supplies out right on target and we had to run to keep from being hit by the bundles. A perfect drop.

A copter came in with the radio batteries and possibly take out the more serious casualties. He had no more than touched down when heavy sniper fire began to strike the craft. The supplies were dumped and immediately took off to prevent loss of the craft. In the afternoon another drop was made but by this time by the Air Force using flying boxcars which were totally unsuitable for the pinpoint drop needed for Fox Hill.
