A Day in the Life of a Soldier

Traveling in a small convoy of 155 self propelled howitzers we were all stopped and sat around the side of the road waiting for news about what the problem was ahead. The unit was from Sunbury, PA. The emblem was a white rectangle with a red devils face centered in the white field. As the afternoon passed we saw a steady stream of civilians and some ROK soldiers heading away from where we were going. Suddenly the guns pulled off the road and started firing. At first the guns were pointed upwards for distance and then they started lowering them. Next there was small arms fire and then we hauled you know what! I did get a chance to talk to the artillery men and he told me that going down the road at full speed they could pull over and have a round in the air in less than a minute. He also said that three of the guns had made it across the mountain before the road had collapsed. That is why we were waiting at the side of the road earlier in the day. It was It was nice weather, for what that's worth.
