Archilochus alexandri -- Common in western mountains, This is our only hummer with a truly black throat; throats of other species may look black in poor light. White below the purple stripe confirms this species. Often captures insects flycatcher-fashion. Female has no rufous on sides and tail. Call-a slurred thew.
