Wood Duck

Aix sponsa - This is a common duck of open woodland around lakes and along streams. The large head, the short neck, and the long square tail are good field marks. No other duck has the long slicked-back crest. The dull-colored female has a white eye ring. Males in eclipse plumage resemble the female, but have much white under the chin. Flight is rapid. Wood Ducks dodge agilely between the trees. They feed on plant materials, from duckweed to acorns and some insects. Nesting is in natural tree cavities, but also use nest boxes. The call is a distinctive rising whistle.
