Melanerpes lewis - Locally common in large trees in open country. Red face and light collar and underparts contrast with the rest of its dark-greenish plumage. The rump is black. Flight is slow, with even, crow-like flapping. Gregarious. Catches flying insects. Call is of soft short notes.
