12 Steps to Canning Pears Step 11, Removing the Cooked Jars After the required time, (20 minutes for pints, 25 for Quarts) remove the lid carefully so you don't scald yourself with the escaping steam. Remove the jars using the hot jar lifter and place on newspapers to cool. We have colored some of the pears with red and green food coloring for use at our holiday dinners. We add some food coloring to the syrup in small batches. To the red batch we add red food coloring and a cinnamon stick. Boil a short time. For the green batch we add a tiny amount of mint oil.
