Because we rode bicycles to school my mother insisted we wear ugly brown cotton stockings held up by garter belts. I hated them and envied the "town girls" who wore pretty white anklets. Sometimes my sister Gwen and I would stop at the service station halfway to school. In the restroom we would unhook the garter belt and roll down the brown stockings to a big fat roll around our ankles. I'm sure it looked a bit silly but to us it was an improvement.
