Trees Growing at Our Pleasant Hill Oregon Home

Holly

Ilex Aquifoliaceae Evergreen shrubs or trees. Hollies range from foot high dwarfs to 50ft trees. Most plants are male or female, and in general both plants must be present for female to bear fruit. There are exceptions: some female holly plants will set fruit without pollination, and hormone sprays may induce berry set on female flowers. Best bet is to have plants of both sexes. Male plants have no berries. We have one of these and it is quite small. We get our berries from Bernice's hair dresser who has a number of mature hollies. The birds love the berries and sometimes get drunk enough so they cannot fly as they gorge on the fermented berries.
