Young Married Couple $10 Prize

18. Paul Wins Second Prize in a Beauty Contest

Paul tells a secret

Bernice and I were married on July 16, 1955. Some time after we were married I mentioned to Bernice that I had once won a beauty contest and although I had just won second prize I was pleased at that. The prize gave me $10. It was nice to get the money, as I needed it at the time. It wasn't a big prize but I had won it fair and square. Naturally as a young woman in love, she believed me. It was good that she believed me because it was true. I had won the second prize.

Many Years Later the Truth comes Out

Perhaps some 10-12 years later our family, Chet, Landon, Bernice and I were playing games one evening. We were engrossed in a game of Monopoly and the kids were doing a good job. I don't remember who was winning but as the game went along Bernice's marker stopped on the square called "Community Chest." It really is a chance because you can win something good or even "Pay Income Taxes" and owe $200. Well, her Community Chance card said, "You have won second prize in a Beauty Contest. Collect $10." She looked at me and I looked at her and I knew the gig was up. She began to giggle and remembered my claim of winning a beauty contest. We both had a good laugh. The kids learned the story and they also laughed.
