Coltsfoot (Western Coltsfoot, Alpine Coltsfoot)

Petasites frigidus - Locally common, early spring, perennial, 1-2 ft. Stout erect stem with tight cluster of whitish to pink rayless flowers that open before leaves emerge. Flower stalk continues to lengthen as large leaves unfold. Leaves pinnately divided, lobes coarsely toothed. Flowers in often purplish bell-shaped cup. Grows in bogs, stream edges, roadsides, other wet soils. Native.
