Cladonia Squamosa Lichen

Cladonia squamosa - A medium-sized, upright club lichen, 15-45 mm tall, rising from clusters of tiny, greenish basal scales; clubs often hollow, covered in tiny scales, occasionally terminating in narrow, open cups, these sometimes ringed with brown fruiting bodies. Found on mossy ground, decaying wood in open or somewhat shady sites, mostly at lower and middle elevations; common. Roughly 70 species of Cladonia occur in our region.
