Carbon Antlers Mushroom -

Xylaria hypoxylon Thin-stalked, forked, woody club; white near top, black near base. Club: 1 3/8 to 3 1/4 in. high, 1/4 to 3/8 in. thick; thin-stalked, branched, and more or less cylindrical; upper portion at first powdery white because of asexual spores, then becoming black; lower portion black, hairy. Flesh white, woody, rough. Spores: heart-shaped, black. Season: June-August in East; October in Pacific NW; December- February California. Habitat: On dead wood. Range: Throughout North America.
