Castilleja hispida - Locally common, early summer perennial, 8-24 in. Cluster forms from woody base, with many bristly hairs. Stems erect to ascending, usually unbranched. Leaves lance-shaped to linear; upper stem leaves may be divided into 3 or more shallow lobes. Inflorescence short, elongating later. Bracts bright scarlet, sometimes yellow, broad, deeply lobed, 3-5 lobes, partly covering greenish flowers. Grows in dry openings in forests, meadows, from coast to high elevations.
