Purple Sanicle

Sanicula bipinnatifida - Locally common, late spring, perennial, 6-36 in. Erect or spreading stems. Leaves green, purple, or grayish, double pinnately divided, leaflets toothed; flat, sharply pointed wings along sides of main vein. Flowers in round balls, usually purplish red, rarely yellow, with pistils and stamens exceeding petals. Grows in open grasslands, open oak and pine woods, often on rocky serpentine, at low elevations. Native.
