Spring Queen

Synthyris reniformis - Perennial herb from a short rhizome or stem base; flowering stem leafless, up to 15 cm tall. Leaves all basal, on long stalks, heart-shaped to kidney-shaped, palmately veined, shallowly lobed (lobes themselves round-toothed), sparsely hairy, 2-8 cm long and wide. Flowers are bell-shaped, 5-7 cm long, 4 lobed; 2 stamens; flowers few in short clusters at the ends of stalks that are weak and curved. Found in open coniferous forests, glades, forest edges; common at low elevations.
