2. Compound Personal Pronouns

Sometimes the word self or selves is added to certain forms of the personal pronouns. Pronouns formed in this way are called compound personal pronouns.

myself    herself    yourself     ourselves    himself   yourselves   itself    themselves

A compound personal pronoun is used in two ways:
  1. as reflective pronoun
    The chef burned himself yesterday.
    Chef and himself refer to the same person. (reflective use)
  2. as intensive pronouns
    I made the dress myself.
    Myself intensifies the personal pronoun I. (intensive use)
    John himself built the desk.
    Himself intensifies the noun John. (intensive use)

The compound personal pronoun must refer back to a noun or pronoun.

My wife and myself loved the movie. (incorrect)
My wife and I loved the movie. (correct)
