The reign of Shen Zong (Zhu Yiju), which at first had great prosperity, began to crumble in 1580. His ability to cope with threats from abroad or with financial, socio-political crisis punctuated the empire at the end of the sixteenth century. Social and economic changes came about to the detriment of agriculture.
