Within seven years, Chin was on its way to overpowering many of the states.
But while foreign enemies were being toppled, inside his court, members of his
own family were plotting to overthrow him – the masterminds - his own mother
and her new companion, a man posing as a eunuch who fathered her two secret
sons. They proved no match for King Ying Jien, however, who decided after this
and another brutal assassination attempt in 227 BC, that merciless control
would become standard treatment for everyone, regardless of rank or relation.
