Visit to Lewis Ke Family, Countryside

1. Lewis Ke, Bernice and Stuart Yao

This is a picture of Lewis Ke, Bernice and Stuart Yao in the park in the City of Xinzheng. Bernice and I were teaching at SIAS University there. I had also the job of Vice-President of the University. Bernice and I talked individually to each of 200 students to determine their English speaking ability for placement in classes on Oral English. This was so their level in each class was fairly equal. We first met Mr. Ke in this way. We gave him the English name of Lewis. We had placed him Class C with D being the lowest.

My next contact with Lewis was when he came to see me in my office and asked to be placed higher because he felt his English level was better than we had first heard. Quite a few had asked for the same and about 10% were moved up. Some were moved down also as they had difficulty in competing in their class. With the teachers approval we would make some moves. I moved Lewis up. Often when they first talk to us they are very nervous and don't do as well as they are able.
