Liaoning did not exist prior to 1954. When the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, two provinces called Liaodong and Liaoxi existed along with Shenyang, Luda, Anshan, Fushun and Benxi as municipalities. These were later merged to form Liaoning Province. Parts of the former Rahe province were added to Liaoning Province in 1955. Though Liaoning Province took parts of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region during the Cultural Revolution, it has been reversed back a few years ago. Liaoning has several geographical areas which are the Western Highlands, with the Nulu'erhu Mountains located in the Western Highlands. Central Liaoning Province is considerably flat and has a low altitude. Mount Huabozi is at 1336m above sea level the highest point of the province of Liaoning.
