Refugees Flee North Korea 581st Signal Radio Relay Co. at Hungnam (1950)
7. Refugees Flee North Korea

In December 1950, United Nations forces made a orderly withdrawal from North Korea as massive numbers of Chinese troops fought U.N. forces in bitter cold temperatures. And as American troops from the 1st Marine Division and the Army's 7th and 3rd Infantry Divisions pulled out of the North Korean port of Hungnam, tens of thousands of refugees followed, hoping to be evacuated to the South. It turned into one of the largest evacuations of civilians ever undertaken by the U.S. military. Considered to be anti-Communist sympathizers, the refugees were fleeing North Korean and Chinese troops, who were inflicting heavy casualties on the U.N. troops, including many Americans.
