15. Korean Workers Helping Taejon Relay

These men did all the hard labor such as, bringing equipment and supplies up the trails where no vehicle could travel. I've always liked this picture. The quality is not good, but I don't have the negative. The original is 2"x2". He is obviously a proud man, satisfied with his status. He is using the Korean traditional Chige to carry his load. They are always hand made from tree branches. The straps are woven rice straw. He has a long crooked stick to use to steady himself in the slippery ice and snow. It is also used to prop up the chige when he rests. Note the chige has long legs so he can set it down and pick it up easily. A very functional engineered device of many years of Korean heritage.
