16. Korean Workers Helping Taejon Relay

This worker is dressed for the weather, which is cold as you can see. He is using the Korean traditional Chige to carry his load. They are always hand made from tree branches. The straps are woven rice straw. He has a long crooked stick to use to steady himself in the slippery ice and snow. It is also used to prop up the chige when he rests. Note the chige has long legs so he can set it down and pick it up easily. The tiled roofed building to his rear is the one we had built to replace the squad tent.
