1. Koreans Carry Equipment to Hill 1157

Hill 1157 or Yong Mun San as the Koreans know it, is the highest mountain in South Korea. The highest in North Korea is Pek To San, which is mentioned in the Korean National Anthem. Fortunately we weren't ask to put one there. Hill 1157 gets its army name form the height in meters of the mountain. When we first arrived here we had to walk up the mountain. It is about 10 miles up the hill. Some 10 tons of equipment needed to be carried up the hill for the station. We got a ration of about 100 Koreans to help us get the equipment to the top. The army also gave me South Korean money to the tune of a 1,000,000 Won at a time to pay the laborers.

That is $166.66 in US dollars. We paid the men 1000 Won a day and they were very happy to get the work. One of my jobs was to take our 2 1/2 ton truck to pick up the laborers each day. Here the men rest on the way up the hill.    Hi-Res Pic (122K)
