Richmond Relay Station Pic 2 Richmond Relay - 1969-70 2. We Arrive in Seoul

Headquarters for STRATCOM was in Seoul and my class was taken to the compound for further assignments. I do not recall its name but it was in or on Yongsan Compound. About 4 guys were assigned to M.P. units for some reason, 5 would stay there in the North Battalion while Val, myself and Tom Urban from Hialeah (?) FL would be going to the South Battalion. Tom was also the top student in our class and would later be the Site Chief for Hialeah Site in Pusan. We traveled in a train U.N. coach car for military and dependents only south past Osan, Taejon and arrived in Taegu.

STRATCOM Long/Lines Battalion-South HQ's was in Taegu at Camp Walker. There were 3 companies, A in Pusan, B in Taegu and C company in Taejon where I would be assigned. I stayed at HQ a couple of days processing but then it was back on the U.N. train for Taejon. Taejon was a fairly large city but it did not have many U.S. troops stationed in the area. Camp Ames was about 10mi N.E of town and was a 7th Infantry Division compound.

The signal compound for Company C was small so Camp Ames was the most known of in the area. My unit received medical, financial and other support from here as it was the largest base in the area. The HQ for Co'C' STRATCOM LL/Bn was a small compound called Stonestown. The company's area went from Osan AB to the North and included Bucket Site, Crown Site at K-6 Pyongteck, Highpoint, Kunsan AB and Tacoma Site 10 to the West and Richmond Site on a mountain above Taejon. There were also many VHF radio stations and sites in the area including Tea an-Ni but I do not remember their names and call signs. We only knew the systems went somewhere in a general area but beyond that we did not know who was using the thousands of radio and data circuits we operated.
