Barrow's Goldeneye range

Bucephala islandica - Rather common in the West; winters on coasts and rivers. Male is told from Common Goldeneye by white facial crescent, purple head, and blacker sides. The crest tends to be more flattened and pointed to the rear. Female has less white on wing than Common, darker head, abrupt forehead; and in spring, and early summer the short bill may be entirely yellow, not black with yellow tip. Eats crustaceans.
